This is a very quick project and simple, too, because of the yarn weight and the easy repeated stitch (sc in back loops only) from start to end. The ribbed outcome produces a very elastic fabric so that one size fits almost everyone!
WHAT YOU NEED
- 6mm hook
- COLOUR TWEED from TEDI (check here), 100g, 163m, 74% acrylic/ 20% wool / 6% viscose : 1 ball in cream (yarn A) and 1 ball in charcoal (yarn B).
- scissors/tape measure/yarn needle
- pompom maker (optional) to obtain a 8.5cm diameter pompom
Please be aware I follow the US crochet terminology
Skill level : confident beginner/intermediate
You can use any medium/worsted yarn weight to achieve a similar effect.
So let`s start !!!
PATTERN
With yarn A chain 51.
Your foundation row (= row 1) is made of single crochet (sc) stitches worked inserting the hook under the bump strands to obtain a nice neat edge.
Row 1 (RS) : insert hook under second bump from hook and work your first sc, then sc across till end, turn. [50 sts]
Row 2 (WS) : 1ch, 50 sc in back loops only, turn.
Rows 3-40 : repeat row 2. When working last stitch of row 40 : change colour in last stitch draw to yarn B.
Rows 41-65 : repeat row 2, turn.
Thread the yarn through the needle and pass it in and out along the edge of the tube. When you reach the starting point, pull the yarn tightly and secure the top with some knots. No worries if you get a small hole, because it will be hidden by the pompom !!! Turn the tube inside out. Weave in all ends.
POMPOM
You can wrap one side of the pompom maker with cream yarn and the other side with charcoal, so to have a double colour pompom
BRIM
Fold the bottom edge of the hat to the top, at least 6 cm in length. You can fix it simply stitching a couple of stitches on both sides of the hat!
Before folding the rectangle into a tube, you may know that its dimensions are :
36 cm wide (bottom and top) and 40 cm high (sides)
and more precisely :
the first 40 rows form a rectangle with the following measurements :
36 cm wide and 25 cm high
This means that the charcoal part has H = 15 cm
The above information is useful if you are going to use different weights of yarns from the ones I`ve been using, just to have an idea on how you can adapt the pattern if you have to !
Thank you, xxxx Alessandra
