Make it! The Lovely Funny Hat !!!

Hi there!!!!

It seems I`m not able (or can`t find the time) to be here more regurarly, and I`m sorry for that, as I really love this place of mine... anyway, I made another pattern to share with you all!

The idea came to me last year, while working on triangle motifs to figure out a simple heart.. this came out very elongated and I decided to use it for a silly hat, good for both Valentine`s Day and the italian Carnevale, at the end of February...!!!

This ridiculous hat is a very quick make and I like the fact it doesn`t need to be stiffened to hold its point up!!!

The hat is made of 3 panels (1 upside-down heart and 2 triangles), worked using DC (= British tr) stitches and joined as you go (no sewing involved).

The upside-down heart is kept on the back of your head when wearing the hat, as you can see from the above picture : there is a kind of tail along my neck on the left selfie of my collage !

WHAT YOU NEED :

  • YARN : King Cole BIG VALUE chunky, 100g, 100% premium acrylic, shade 553 Red, 1 ball                 Hayfield BONUS CHUNKY , 100g, 100% acrylic, shade 931 Stormcloud, 1 ball
  • 6mm hook
  • a pair of scissors
  • yarn needle
  • 1 stitch marker (optional) to put on the front of the 1st motif to be aware of the RS (right side)
Please note that I`m following the US crochet terminology.

My turning chain (2ch) is never considered as a proper stitch.

The pattern is intended for intermediate crocheters.

The hat size is ADULT and one size fits most. (My head circumference is about 60cm)

CROCHET STITCHES and ABBREVIATIONS :

ch : chain
sl st : slip stitch
SC : single crochet (= dc UK)
DC : double crochet (= tr UK)
TR : treble (= dt UK)
DC2tog : basic decrease stitch (= tr2tog UK)
F.O. : fasten off
RS : right side of your work
WS : wrong side of your work

FIRST TRIANGLE PANEL

Different colours, but right picture!!!

We are going to follow the same pattern for the first part of the heart panel, but the triangle is joined as you go to the previous panel ! The joinings are highlighted in bold and they happen only at the end of each odd row.

Pick up the heart panel (you can put a stitch marker on the front of it) with the RS facing you. Each time you will join the new one to it, the heart panel will be at the left of the working panel.

Insert the hook (from front to back) in the bottom point of the heart and join the new colour (stormcloud), then chain 3.

Row 1 (RS) : wrap yarn around hook and insert hook in 3rd ch from hook, working your 1st DC (tr). In same chain work another DC (tr), sl st in top of 1st DC of 1st row of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of 2nd row of heart, TURN. [2 DC/tr]

Row 2 (WS) : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN. [4 DC/tr]

Row 10 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 8 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN. [12 DC/tr]

Row 11 : 12 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 11 of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 12 of heart, TURN.

Row 12 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 10 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN. [14 DC/tr]

Row 13 : 14 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 13 of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 14 of heart, TURN.

Row 15 : 16 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 15 of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 16 of heart, TURN.

Row 16 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 14 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN. [18 DC/tr]

Row 23 (RS) : 24 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 23 of heart, F.O.

SECOND TRIANGLE PANEL

Even this time there is some joining.... more than the previous one! In fact, this new panel is worked joining it to both previous panels !!! In this way you avoid any sewing and when completed you have a hat!!!

The joinings are highlighted in bold and they happen at the end of each row, only on the RS of the work!

This time, the heart will be at your right, while the first triangle will be at your left.

Little by little you will see the conic shape of your hat becoming bigger and bigger....

Insert the hook (from front to back) in the bottom point of the triangle and join the colour stormcloud, then chain 3.

Row 1 (RS) : sl st in top of 1st DC of row 1 of heart, wrap yarn around hook and insert hook in 3rd ch from hook, working your 1st DC (tr). In same chain work another DC (tr), sl st in top of 1st DC of 1st row of triangle, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of 2nd row of triangle, TURN. [2 DC/tr]

Row 2 (WS) : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 2 DC in last stitch, TURN, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 2 of heart, 2ch, sl st in to top of 1st DC of row 3 of heart, TURN. [4 DC/tr]

Row 23 (RS) : 24 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 23 of heart, F.O.

Trim all ends in.

If your hat is made of 2 triangles and 1 heart, once done, it will be like the one on the bottom left of the above picture. The upside-down heart is the back of the heart.

If you decide, instead, to work a hat with 2 hearts and 1 triangle, the back/sides will be like the one in the top right of the picture. In this case, the 2 hearts will cover your neck and ears!

EDGING

Just to give a neat finish to your hat!

Make a slip knot on your hook with red yarn and work a round of SC (dc), starting the start of right curve of the heart. To close the round, simply sl st in top of first SC made. Trim in all ends.

EMBELLISHMENTS

HEART

With red yarn, make a slip knot on hook and work 3 chains.

Row 1 (RS) : 2 DC into 1st chain, 2ch, TURN (2 DC )
Row 2 (WS) : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN (4 DC)
Row 3 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 1 DC in each stitch, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN (6 DC)
Row 4 : 2 DC in first stitch, 1 DC in each stitch, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN (8 DC)
Row 5 : 2 DC in first stitch, 1 DC in each stitch, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN (10 DC)
Row 6 : 10 DC, 3ch, TURN (10 DC)
Row 7 (RS) : 5Trtog, cut yarn and fasten off; join yarn in next stitch and 3ch in same stitch and work 5Trtog. Cut yarn and fasten off. Weave in ends!

[The above pattern was copied and pasted from my IG FEED : https://www.instagram.com/p/BtxpLbClXXc/]

Put it on the front of your hat and sew it on!

Trim all ends in.

If you prefer, you can crochet smaller hearts (4mm hook and DK yarn) and decorate your hat differently :

POM-POM

Wrap 80 (more or less) times the red yarn around your fingers. Slide it off and knot another red lenght of yarn around it. Trim the excess of yarn and attach the pom-pom at the top of your hat, letting it dangle a little bit !

DONE!!!

... As usual : if you try to crochet one hat or more, please let me know!

Enjoy crocheting,

xxxx Alessandra

Make it ! Diamonds Christmas Tree !!!

...Well, it has been a while since my last post, right ?

I`ve been missing this place a lot and I hope to be here regurarly from now on, hoping you love the idea, too !!!

So December is here again and I love this time of the year very much and that`s why I have a pattern  to show you my last christmassy idea... are you ready to follow me?

WHAT YOU NEED :

5mm and 4mm hooks
scissors
yarn needle
pompom maker : I use a 45mm Clover pompom maker
some colourful mini bells
PVA glue, brush, pins, blocking board or foam tiles

YARN : it`s all from my personal stash. I`m using a selection of Simply Aran from Paintbox Yarns (the Diamonds part), some Sirdar no 1 for the embellishments (pompoms, candies), and some metallic options (Hayfield Bonus Glitter, Sparkle Glamourus Yarn from B&M, etc). I will try to more specific later in the pattern writing.

Please, remember I follow the US crochet terminology !!

My turning chain (=2ch) is never considered as a proper stitch.

Difficulty level : Intermediate

ABOUT THE PATTERN

As you can see from the above picture, the tree is made of diamond motifs. The pattern starts with the triangle on the bottom left and ends with the triangle at the bottom right. In the between, you work vertical strips of motifs, joined one after the other with a sort of "Join-As-You-Go" method. The joining itself is made using slip stitches and it`s well explained in the pattern. In this way, no sewing is involved.

PATTERN STARTS

You can use a maximum of 7 different shades. The above 4 triangles are crocheted using a 5mm hook and a selection of Simply Aran Paintbox Yarns . Obviously, you can use any substitute from your personal yarn stash.

First Strip (T1) = triangle motif

Choose a starting colour, make a slip knot on your hook and work a foundation chain of 14 chains.

Row 1 (Right Side) : wrap yarn around hook and insert tip in 3rd chain from hook and work your first DC, then 9DC, DC2tog in last 2 stitches, 2ch, TURN. [11 DC,1st decr row]

Row 2 (Wrong Side) : 9DC, DC2tog, 2ch, TURN. [10 DC]

Fifth Strip (D5) =  triangle+diamond motifs

Same pattern as for D3, with the difference that you have to join from Row 23 to Row 33 to the correspondent rows of D4.

Select New colour and start

Sixth Strip (D6) = diamond motif

Same pattern as for D2, but you need to join from Row 12 to Row 22 to the corresponding rows of D5.

Select new colour and start

Seventh Strip (T2) = triangle motif

Same pattern of first 11 rows of D3

Weave in all ends !

EDGING and TREE TRUNK

Using a selection of metallic yarns (Hayfield Bonus GlitterSparkle Glamorous Yarn, and some others!!) I did a simple edging around the tree and I added a trunk, too.

Working with 2 threads together and a 5mm hook, you need to keep the RS of the tree facing you, but upside-down, so you start to crochet from its bottom.

Make a slip knot on your hook and insert the tip of 1st diamond on the right (see above picture, yellow arrow) and work your first SC.
Work 1 SC in each bottom chain
Work 2 SC along each DC, on both sides
Work 2 or 3 SC in each bottom corner
When you reach the tree top, chain 21 and slip stitch in 1st chain to make a hanging loop

When you reach the 1st SC of the edging, complete the border with a slip stitch and work 2ch.

In the next 25 stitches work one DC in each one, 2ch, Turn. Repeat other 4 times (so you will a total of 5 rows) to have a small tree trunk. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

BLOCKING

You need to pin your tree, with WS facing you, on a blocking board or foam tiles.

The only tree it`s better to block later, after the embellishments. is the Argyle tree!

Prepare a solution of tap water and PVA glue in equal parts to brush on the back of the tree in order to stiffen it.

Let it dry completely.

Once ready, you can start to decorate it!

ARGYLE TREE

You have to select a couple of contrasting colours from the metallic yarns and with the help of a 4mm hook you just have to work slip stitches to create the argyle effect, first one colour in one direction, then the other colour in the opposite direction.

Starting from the middle bottom of each triangle, you have to draw lines almost parallel (!!!) to the sides of the diamond motifs.... it seems scary and impossible, but believe me it is not !

Once the Argyle design is completed, you can block your tre and when it`s dry, you can add some colourful bells, too!

BOWS TREE

Each bow is a chain made of 70 chains, worked with 2 strands, and knotted into the front of the tree.

4 bells are added to embellish the bottom.

POMPOM TREE

Using the 45mm Clover pompom maker and a strand of metallic yarn together with a strand of Sirdar no 1 , prepare 15 pompoms to knot to the front of the tree. Very easy, but so effective!

CANDY CANES and PEPPERMINT CANDIES TREE

New pattern for sale on Ravelry : My Quintet of Christmas Stockings !!!

Yes, I wrote a new pattern !!!!

It's Christmas related and it gives you some ideas to crochet 5 different stockings:

You may crochet just the one you prefer or even all five, right?

The pattern for sale is full of colourful pictures and it consists of 38 pages.

The crochet skills required : easy/intermediate

You have to know basic stitches as (US crochet terminology) chains, slip stitches, single  and double crochets, the "join-as-you-go" method used to join both toes and heels to the rest of the socks.

With the same pattern you can crochet the following stockings:

The Big Stocking

The Colourful Granny Stripes, the Pompom and the Fringes Stockings

and the Baby Stocking

What do you think???

You are free to use any yarn weight and hook size : it will be fun!!!! The pattern is easily adaptable to any size and you can embellish each stocking as you like : give a lot of freedom to your creativity and have a lot of fun!!!!!

The pattern is for sale on Ravelry HERE !!!!!!

Make it ! Full-lenght Rudi ornament !!!

Yes, today I'm sharing a whole Rudi, not just its head!!! ;oD

Both my boys were not completely satisfied (do you believe that???) with the first Rudi outcome and they described to me what they were wishing for.... I tell you, they wanted something more realistic, but I told them that was not my intention....

So, our shared brainstorming session gave birth to the following ornament ...

... both Matteo and Tobia like most the grey Rudi, as it has a better defined tummy !!!

They were even asking for hooves, but I said that suggestion time was expired, so .... ;oD

WHAT DO YOU NEED :

4mm hook
some DK yarns
yarn needle
scissors
buttons (eyes)
thread and needle to sew buttons and bells on
mini bells
pompom maker (optional)
baker's twine

Remember : I follow the US crochet terminology ! Thank you !!!

RUDI'S BODY

You can choose if you prefer a monochrome tummy or a bicoloured one : it's up to you!!!

In any case, pick up a colour of your choice and make a slip knot on your hook, then chain 12

first round : wrap yarn around your hook and insert tip in 3rd chain from hook and crochet your first double crochet (=DC). Work other 8 DC in the next chains. In last chain, instead, crochet 5 DC. Crochet 8 DC at the base of the previous ones, while in the last chain work 4 DC, then slip stitch in the top of first DC done.

second round : chain 2 and work 2 DC in same stitch, then crochet 8 DC in next stitches, while make 2 DC in each stitch (they are five) of the semicircle (tot : 10 stitches). Crochet 8 DC along the straight side, then work 2 DC in each stitch (they are four) of the other semicircle (tot : 8 stitches). Slip stitch in the top of the first DC made.

third round : chain 2 and work 1 DC in the same stitch, 2 DC in next stitch, 8 DC along the straight side, [1 DC+ 2 DC] 5 times along the first semicircle (tot : 15 stitches), 8 DC along the straight side and end with [1 DC + 2 DC] 4 times along the last semicircle (tot : 12 stitches). Slip stitch in the top of first DC done.
Cut yarn, fasten off and sew ends in.

If you like the tummy in a different colour from the rest of the body, remember to change colour in the last stitch of first round, as done HERE !!!

You can even sew on a mini bell on the tummy!!!

RUDI'S HEAD

Do you remember seeing this same face somewhere else ????? ;oD

Well, it was in my LAST POST that I gave you all the instructions needed to crochet one, right?

This time you don't need a pin, but some baker's twine to make a loop between Rudi's antlers and some yarn (and needle) to sew your head on top of Rudi's body, ok???

RUDI'S LEGS (make two)

You have to work along the other semicircle, the one opposed the head.

In our case, the semicircle is made of 15 DC. Counting from first stitch (red dot) on both sides, find the 7th stitch (twice!) and in each of them, follow these instructions :

Join yarn in the top of the 7th stitch and chain 18. Wrap yarn around hook and push the hook tip in the 3rd chain from hook, where you work your first half double crochet (= hDC). Crochet other 15 hDC along the foundation chain and slip stitch in the same stitch you've joined the yarn.
Cut yarn, fasten off and sew ends in.

Repeat the same pattern in the other 7th stitch !!! ;oD

RUDI'S ARMS (make two)

Luckily, nothing different from the legs' pattern, apart from :

you work in the 4th stitch, counting from the "neck" (valid for both sides)
the foundation chain is made of 12 stitches, not 18!!!

Both my ornaments (antlers not included) reach 23 cm in lenght !

xxxx, Alessandra
