Make it! The Lovely Funny Hat !!!

Hi there!!!!

It seems I`m not able (or can`t find the time) to be here more regurarly, and I`m sorry for that, as I really love this place of mine... anyway, I made another pattern to share with you all!

The idea came to me last year, while working on triangle motifs to figure out a simple heart.. this came out very elongated and I decided to use it for a silly hat, good for both Valentine`s Day and the italian Carnevale, at the end of February...!!!

This ridiculous hat is a very quick make and I like the fact it doesn`t need to be stiffened to hold its point up!!!

The hat is made of 3 panels (1 upside-down heart and 2 triangles), worked using DC (= British tr) stitches and joined as you go (no sewing involved).

The upside-down heart is kept on the back of your head when wearing the hat, as you can see from the above picture : there is a kind of tail along my neck on the left selfie of my collage !

WHAT YOU NEED :

  • YARN : King Cole BIG VALUE chunky, 100g, 100% premium acrylic, shade 553 Red, 1 ball                 Hayfield BONUS CHUNKY , 100g, 100% acrylic, shade 931 Stormcloud, 1 ball
  • 6mm hook
  • a pair of scissors
  • yarn needle
  • 1 stitch marker (optional) to put on the front of the 1st motif to be aware of the RS (right side)
Please note that I`m following the US crochet terminology.

My turning chain (2ch) is never considered as a proper stitch.

The pattern is intended for intermediate crocheters.

The hat size is ADULT and one size fits most. (My head circumference is about 60cm)

CROCHET STITCHES and ABBREVIATIONS :

ch : chain
sl st : slip stitch
SC : single crochet (= dc UK)
DC : double crochet (= tr UK)
TR : treble (= dt UK)
DC2tog : basic decrease stitch (= tr2tog UK)
F.O. : fasten off
RS : right side of your work
WS : wrong side of your work

Starting on the WS, repeat the same pattern for the other curved side of the heart.

FIRST TRIANGLE PANEL

Different colours, but right picture!!!

We are going to follow the same pattern for the first part of the heart panel, but the triangle is joined as you go to the previous panel ! The joinings are highlighted in bold and they happen only at the end of each odd row.

Pick up the heart panel (you can put a stitch marker on the front of it) with the RS facing you. Each time you will join the new one to it, the heart panel will be at the left of the working panel.

Insert the hook (from front to back) in the bottom point of the heart and join the new colour (stormcloud), then chain 3.

Row 1 (RS) : wrap yarn around hook and insert hook in 3rd ch from hook, working your 1st DC (tr). In same chain work another DC (tr), sl st in top of 1st DC of 1st row of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of 2nd row of heart, TURN. [2 DC/tr]

Row 2 (WS) : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN. [4 DC/tr]

Row 3 : 4 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 3 of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 5 of heart, TURN.

Row 4 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 2 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN. [6 DC/tr]

Row 5 : 6 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 5 of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 6 of heart, TURN.

Row 6 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 4 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN. [8 DC/tr]

Row 7 : 8 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 7 of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 8 of heart, TURN.

Row 8 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 6 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, TURN. [10 DC/tr]

Row 9 : 10 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 9 of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 10 of heart, TURN.

Row 10 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 8 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN. [12 DC/tr]

Row 11 : 12 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 11 of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 12 of heart, TURN.

Row 12 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 10 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN. [14 DC/tr]

Row 13 : 14 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 13 of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 14 of heart, TURN.

Row 14 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 12 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN. [16 DC/tr]

Row 15 : 16 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 15 of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 16 of heart, TURN.

Row 16 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 14 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN. [18 DC/tr]

Row 17 : 18 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 17 of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 18 of heart, TURN.

Row 18 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 16 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN. [20 DC/tr]

Row 19 : 20 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 19 of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 20 of heart, TURN.

Row 22 (WS) : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 20 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN. [24 DC/tr]

Row 23 (RS) : 24 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 23 of heart, F.O.

SECOND TRIANGLE PANEL

Even this time there is some joining.... more than the previous one! In fact, this new panel is worked joining it to both previous panels !!! In this way you avoid any sewing and when completed you have a hat!!!

The joinings are highlighted in bold and they happen at the end of each row, only on the RS of the work!

This time, the heart will be at your right, while the first triangle will be at your left.

Little by little you will see the conic shape of your hat becoming bigger and bigger....

Insert the hook (from front to back) in the bottom point of the triangle and join the colour stormcloud, then chain 3.

Row 1 (RS) : sl st in top of 1st DC of row 1 of heart, wrap yarn around hook and insert hook in 3rd ch from hook, working your 1st DC (tr). In same chain work another DC (tr), sl st in top of 1st DC of 1st row of triangle, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of 2nd row of triangle, TURN. [2 DC/tr]

Row 2 (WS) : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 2 DC in last stitch, TURN, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 2 of heart, 2ch, sl st in to top of 1st DC of row 3 of heart, TURN. [4 DC/tr]

Row 3 : 4 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 3 of triangle, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 5 of triangle, TURN.

Row 4 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 2 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, TURN, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 4 of heart, 2ch, sl st in to top of 1st DC of row 5 of heart, TURN. [6 DC/tr]

Row 5 : 6 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 5 of triangle, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 6 of triangle, TURN.

Row 6 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 4 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, TURN, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 6 of heart, 2ch, sl st in to top of 1st DC of row 7 of heart, TURN. [8 DC/tr]

Row 8 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 6 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, TURN, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 8 of heart, 2ch, sl st in to top of 1st DC of row 9 of heart, TURN. [10 DC/tr]

Row 9 : 10 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 9 of heart, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 10 of heart, TURN.

Row 10 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 8 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, TURN, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 10 of heart, 2ch, sl st in to top of 1st DC of row 11 of heart, TURN. [12 DC/tr]

Row 11 : 12 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 11 of triangle, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 12 of triangle, TURN.

Row 12 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 10 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, TURN, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 12 of heart, 2ch, sl st in to top of 1st DC of row 13 of heart, TURN. [14 DC/tr]

Row 21 : 22 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 21 of triangle, 2ch, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 22 of triangle, TURN.

Row 22 (WS) : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 20 DC, 2 DC in last stitch, TURN, sl st into top of 1st DC of row 22 of heart, 2ch, sl st in to top of 1st DC of row 23 of heart, TURN. [24 DC/tr]

Row 23 (RS) : 24 DC, sl st in top of 1st DC of row 23 of heart, F.O.

Trim all ends in.

If your hat is made of 2 triangles and 1 heart, once done, it will be like the one on the bottom left of the above picture. The upside-down heart is the back of the heart.

If you decide, instead, to work a hat with 2 hearts and 1 triangle, the back/sides will be like the one in the top right of the picture. In this case, the 2 hearts will cover your neck and ears!

EDGING

Just to give a neat finish to your hat!

Make a slip knot on your hook with red yarn and work a round of SC (dc), starting the start of right curve of the heart. To close the round, simply sl st in top of first SC made. Trim in all ends.

EMBELLISHMENTS

HEART

With red yarn, make a slip knot on hook and work 3 chains.

Row 1 (RS) : 2 DC into 1st chain, 2ch, TURN (2 DC )
Row 2 (WS) : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN (4 DC)
Row 3 : 2 DC in 1st stitch, 1 DC in each stitch, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN (6 DC)
Row 4 : 2 DC in first stitch, 1 DC in each stitch, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN (8 DC)
Row 5 : 2 DC in first stitch, 1 DC in each stitch, 2 DC in last stitch, 2ch, TURN (10 DC)
Row 6 : 10 DC, 3ch, TURN (10 DC)
Row 7 (RS) : 5Trtog, cut yarn and fasten off; join yarn in next stitch and 3ch in same stitch and work 5Trtog. Cut yarn and fasten off. Weave in ends!

[The above pattern was copied and pasted from my IG FEED : https://www.instagram.com/p/BtxpLbClXXc/]

Put it on the front of your hat and sew it on!

Trim all ends in.

If you prefer, you can crochet smaller hearts (4mm hook and DK yarn) and decorate your hat differently :

POM-POM

Wrap 80 (more or less) times the red yarn around your fingers. Slide it off and knot another red lenght of yarn around it. Trim the excess of yarn and attach the pom-pom at the top of your hat, letting it dangle a little bit !

DONE!!!

... As usual : if you try to crochet one hat or more, please let me know!

Enjoy crocheting,

Make it ! Home Sweet Home garland !!!

A while ago (read this post, if you wish to be aware what I'm talking about), I crocheted some little houses, which then were forgotten in a box, once no more needed (as for the blogpost, dated 15 of October 2013!)....

.... but in one of those days that you decide it's time to do some clean up, I found them again and I knew, this time, what to do with all of these little houses !!!

I split them into two groups, each one with 7 houses.
The first group had a prevail of blues, greens and grey ...

The original pattern is the following (US crochet terminology) :
  • make a slip knot on your hook, chain 4 and slip stitch in the first chain to form a ring.
  • chain 3, crochet 10 DCs into the ring and slip stitch in the top of your first DC made
  • chain 8 (chain 3= DC and chain 5 more, to form the first arch), in same stitch crochet 1 DC, crochet 3 DCs in next 3 stitches, chain 5 (2nd arch) and crochet 1 DC in following stitch, crochet 3 DCs in next 3 stitches, chain 5 (3rd arch), crochet 3 DCs in last 3 stitches and slip stitch in third chain of first arch
  • chain 3, and around the first arch : (3 DCs, chain 5, 3 DCs), 4 DCs in top of previous group of DCs, 8 DCs around the second arch, 4 DCs in top of previous of DCs, 8 DCs around the third arch, 3 DCs in top of previous group of DCs and slip stitch in the top of first DC made
  • roof : chain 3 and first DC in same stitch, 2 DCs in next stitches, and around the last arch : (3 DCs, chain 5, 3 DCs), 3 DCs, chain 3 and slip stitch in nearby DC or, if you prefer, just make another DC (instead of a chain 3)
  • fasten off
I've been using a 5mm hook and some colourful Indonesian acrylic yarns, but, honestly, you can choose any yarn and hook in accordance with the thickness of your thread!
Please note that DC stands for double crochet.

To join together all the houses into a garland, I decided to use a 4mm hook and some turquoise yarn from Sirdar (Wash'n' Wear), in this way :

make a slip knot on your hook and chain 60
choose your first house and in the first DC make a SC (single crochet), make other 5 SCs along the roof, 5 SCs around the arch, crochet the last 6 SCs along the other side of the roof
chain 18 between two different houses
chain 60, when completed the join with the last house
fasten off and trim the ends

when all done, I decided to add some little hearts (pattern HERE, from Lovenote Crafts) in the middle of the houses

I just knotted the hearts, using their tails, in the centre of each house

This first garland is no more in my hands, as I gifted it to Anneke, from crochetinpaternoster !!!

But, I kept the other one (plus an extra house!) just for me

The single house has just few differences with the houses in the garland :

the top has a loop (made of 20 chains) and 6 SCs along the arch (instead of 5)
the base of the house is embellished with some SCs
the heart in the middle, this time, presents some surface crochet

So, my garland is more reddish and pinkish ...

.... and hanging from one of my bookcases ....

.... all the houses are on a string, NOW !!!!

A scarf full of love (and mini hearts)!!!!

Two weeks ago (more or less) my nonna Miranda ( my grandma) went to the hospital because of ischemia .... Luckily, after a week there, she came back home with no consequences (she is allergic to a lot of drugs and sometimes she finds the one that really hurts her ....)....
I was in contact with my mum everyday just to check how nonna was (Maputo is not really close to Milano...) and to avoid panic or guilt feelings as I couldn't be there, I started to crochet a long scarf, full of hearts (and in the colours my nonna likes most), to express my love for her ....
I hope to find a colleague of my husband going to Italy now for work reasons, so I will give him the scarf for my nonna (office headquarters are in Milano, so ...) ....

The pattern is not mine : you can have a look HERE , where you'll find a photo tutorial and a precious graphic scheme. Thank you Charlotte !!!

I've been working with different hook sizes (4mm for fringes, 4,25mm for base and 3,75mm for the hearts) and, so, with different (slightly) yarn weights :
-SNUGGLY DK from SIRDAR (shade 0385, blue twist) as the main colour for the scarf (almost two balls). The foundation chain was of 400 chains, if I recall well....
-MERINO BLEND from KATIA (color 5, navy blue)
-ATOMO from SANDILANE (color 26, pearl grey)
-BALMY PLUSS from B.B.B. FILATI (color 287, green)
-OXFORD from KATIA, variegated yarn with flecks (color 206 and color 207) for the fringes

When the main body of the scarf was completed, I decided to finish the long edges with a row of slip stitches (same yarn used for the fringes), as you can see

For the fringes I've followed two different patterns (#127 and #131), taken from the book "Around the corner CROCHET BORDERS" by Edie Eckman, where you can find both written patterns and graphic schemes!

Then, blocking moment ...

the scarf is 230cm long ...

.... and once dried ....

and on my favourite model ....

Ti voglio bene nonna Miranda!!

Make it ! The Cheeky Monkey Heart !!!

I made a first try crocheting this funny heart one year ago, but I was not happy with my attempts, so I left it in a corner of a drawer, where I collect all my crochet ideas and patterns ... they are so many, that I could write more than one book with all them!!! ;oD

Last week, I told myself to try again and crochet a better heart and during the weekend I DID IT !!!
So now I'm going to share with you my new Valentine's Day pattern :

... named the "CHEEKY MONKEY HEART" as you can point out a monkey face in it (or not?)!!!

Before starting to crochet this decorative heart, you need to gather :
  • some yarn (minimum 2 different colours), any kind or weight
  • crochet hook, size according to the type of chosen yarn
  • a pair of scissors
  • yarn needle
  • stitch markers (optional)
Please remember that I follow the US crochet terminology, thank you !!!

To start this project, you have to choose first the colour for the inner part of the heart, as we will start crocheting the 3 circles : I've been working with a 5,5mm hook and some grey yarn (acrylic from Indonesia).

Make a slip knot on your hook and chain 4, then insert the tip of the hook in the first chain made to form a ring. Chain 2 and work 12 double crochet (=DC) into the ring. Close this first round with a slip stitch in the top of the first DC done :

The second round is done as follows : chain 2 + 2 DC in same stitch and then 2 DC in each following stitch, so that you will end with a total of 24 DC. Close this round with a slip stitch in the top of the first DC, cut yarn (leaving a long tail) and fasten off :

This first circle will find it's place in the top left part of your heart!

Now start the second circle and complete the first round, as before :

Starting the second round of the second circle you are even going to start the join between the two circles (five stitches are involved). In fact, just after the chain 2 you'll crochet the first DC in the same stitch, but stop when the first half is done : at this point, insert the tip of your hook under the first DC (see the above picture for the stitches notation!) :

and wrap once the yarn around your hook and pull it through the stitch of the first circle (you'll have a loop)

and pull this loop through the two loops of the second half of your first DC to be completed

First DC and join done !!!
Repeat the same process for the following 4 DC, remembering that you are working the second round of a DC circle : 2 DC in each stitch!!
you'll have something like the following :

The 6th stitch shown in the above picture is part of the same stitch as the 5th one, but it's not joined to the first circle!

You can complete the second circle as usual and after the closing slip stitch, cut yarn (leaving a long tail) and fasten off :

The second circle will overlap the first one and it is located on the top right of your heart!

Start the third (and last!) circle. After the first round is done, you will join it to both the previous circles, as done between the first and second. The first 6DC of the third circle will join 3 DC on the second circle (first) and then 3 DC on the first circle. These DC are the ones included between the two stitch markers in the below picture:

So, after you've joined these stitches

you can complete the third circle (slip stitch, cut yarn and fasten off), which will overlap the other two and turn upside down the motif created

At this point, you have to change the colour to crochet the edge of the heart. The third circle can be divided into two groups of nine stitches each and you'll start to crochet on the top of the left side of the circle. In This first stitch you will join the new yarn and chain 3, then you'll make your first treble (=Tr) in the same stitch :

and so you can follow this pattern for the next 8 stitches :

  • Tr
  • hTr (half treble)
  • DC
  • DC
  • DC
  • hTr
  • Tr
  • double treble (wrap yarn around hook 3 times)
and you'll see something like this along the side of the third circle

Continue to crochet, this time on the side of the second circle, the following pattern :
  • triple treble (wrap yarn around hook 4 times)
  • double treble
  • Tr
  • Tr
  • hTr
  • DC
  • hDC (half double crochet)
  • hDC
  • hDC
  • hDC
  • DC
  • DC
  • DC
  • hDC
  • hDC
  • SC (single crochet)
  • SC
.... and the right side of the heart is done ....

You have to repeat the same patterns (symmetry is required!) on the left side of your heart, reading both patterns from the bottom to the top, this time !!!

To close the edge, just make a slip stitch in the top of the first treble!
You can even decide if to keep or not a long tail : I've used it (after chaining 5 stitches) to attach a little tassel ! ;oD

If you knot together the tails left at the end of both circle 1 and 2 you can make a loop to hang your cheeky monkey heart ...

the mini tassel was made just wrapping some red yarn around my fingers (20 times) !!

Different yarns and  colours combo make a difference :

Have fun and make a lot of these hearts even for a lovely bunting !!!!

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR !!! YEAR OF THE MONKEY !!!!

.... it seems it was a good idea to leave this pattern in a drawer for the right year and moment!!!!
