Make it! Mega Oval Scarf !!!

Last year (as last free pattern of 2016!) I gifted you an oval pattern to crochet (mini colourful pillow) and right now, as my first free pattern of the new year, I'm offering you a new oval pattern .... ;O)

The funny thing about this work is not the repetition of the oval shape, but the colours choice, as this is not my usual colourful and bright palette, right?

I think is a good thing try something different from time to time and having some neutral colours in my stash, I decided this was the right time to put them in good use!!!

WHAT YOU NEED :

some chunky yarn ! I've been using the following ones:

ZAMBAK by Kartopu shade K1001(silver grey)
ZAMBAK by Kartopu shade K1002 (darker grey)
ZAMBAK by Kartopu shade K940 (black) (2 balls)
APOLLO by Schachenmayr shade sisal meliert ID #00005 (beige)
SPLASH variegated yarn 50 g (50% acrylic, 50% wool) shade 190 (green prevailing) from Italy
LUMINO by Moda Vera shade 80280255 (neon yellow)

a 5,5 mm hook
a pair of scissors
a yarn needle
stitch markers (optional), to put them on each first and last stitches of both long sides
tape measure or ruler

Remember that I follow the US crochet terminology, thank you !!!

Note that there are increases in each round of the pattern, in both semicircles. The pattern increases of 10 stitches each round, following, more or less, the rules of a Basic Double Crochet Circle Pattern !

SCARF pattern

My colours sequence is the following : silver grey, beige, dark grey, variegated green and black !

With your hook and first colour make a slip knot on the hook and crochet a foundation chain of 204 chain stitches.

Round 1 : wrap yarn around your hook and insert the tip in 3rd chain from hook and work your first double crochet (=DC). This stitch is considered to be part of the second semicircle, as last stitch of it!
Crochet 200 DC along the foundation chain (= first long side). In last chain, instead, work 5 DC (= first semicircle). In this way we can start the second long side, so crochet other 200 DC along the base of the previous side. Now work 4 DC in last chain and slip stitch in top of first DC made (second semicircle completed!). (total stitches : 410)

Round 2 : chain 2 and work 2 DC in the same stitch, work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work 2 DC in each stitch (total = 10 stitches), then crochet other 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : work 2 DC in each stitch (total = 8 stitches). NOTE : you can decide to change colour in the last DC of this round, as I do, or change it at the beginning of next round ! Slip stitch in top of first DC made. (total stitches : 420)

Round 3 : with new colour (beige, in above picture) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, then 2 DC in next stitch. Work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work (1 DC in first stitch + 2 DC in next stitch) 5 times (total = 15 stitches), then crochet other 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat (1 DC in first stitch + 2 DC in next stitch) 4 times (total = 12 stitches). Remember to change colour in last DC ! Slip stitch in top of first DC made. (total stitches : 430)

Round 4 ; with new colour (dark grey, in above picture) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, 1 DC in next stitch and 2 DC in the following stitch. Work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work (1 DC in first DC + 1 DC in next stitch + 2 DC in following stitch) 5 times (total = 20 stitches), then crochet other 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat (1 DC in first stitch + 1 DC in next stitch + 2 DC in following stitch) 4 times (total = 16 stitches). Slip stitch in top of first DC made. (total stitches = 440)

Round 5 : chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, 1 DC in next stitch, 1 DC in following stitch and 2 DC in next stitch. Work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work (1 DC in first stitch + 1 DC in next stitch + 1 DC in following stitch + 2 DC in next stitch ) 5 times (total = 25 stitches), then crochet other 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat (1 DC in first stitch + 1 DC in next stitch +  1 DC in following stitch + 2 DC in next stitch) 4 times (total = 20 stitches). Slip stitch in top of first stitch made. (total stitches = 450)

Round 6 : chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, 1 DC in next stitch, 1 DC in following stitch, 1 DC in next stitch and 2 DC in following stitch. Work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work ( 1 DC in first stitch + 1 DC in next stitch + 1 DC in following stitch + 1 DC in next stitch + 2 DC in following stitch) 5 times (total = 30 stitches), then crochet 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat (1 DC in first stitch + 1 DC in next stitch + 1 DC in following stitch + 1 DC in next stitch + 2 DC in following stitch) 4 times (total = 24 stitches). Remember to change colour in last DC! Slip stitch in top of first DC made. (total stitches = 460)

Round 7 : with new colour (variegated green, in above picture) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, 1 DC in 2nd stitch, 1 DC in 3rd stitch, 1 DC in 4th stitch, 1 DC in 5th stitch and 2 DC in 6th stitch. Work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work (1 DC in 1st stitch + 1 DC in 2nd stitch + 1 DC in 3rd stitch + 1 DC in 4th stitch + 1 DC in 5th stitch + 2 DC in 6th stitch) 5 times (total = 35 stitches), then crochet 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat (1 DC in 1st stitch + 1 DC in 2nd stitch + 1 DC in 3rd stitch + 1 DC in 4th stitch + 1 DC in 5th stitch + 2 DC in 6th stitch) 4 times (total = 28 stitches). Remember to change colour in last DC ! Slip stitch in top of first DC made. (total stitches = 470)

Round 8 : with new colour (black, in above picture) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, 1 DC in next 5 stitches and 2 DC in 7th stitch. Work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work (1 DC in first 6 stitches + 2 DC in 7th stitch) 5 times (total = 40 stitches), then crochet 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat ( 1 DC in first 6 stitches + 2 DC in 7th stitch) 4 times (total = 32 stitches). Slip stitch in top of first DC made. (total stitches = 480)

Round 9 : chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, 1 DC in next 6 stitches and 2 DC in 8th stitch. Work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work (1 DC in first 7 stitches + 2 DC in 8th stitch) 5 times (total = 45 stitches), then crochet 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat (1 DC in first 7 stitches + 2 DC in 8th stitch) 4 times (total = 36 stitches). Slip stitch in top of first DC made. (total stitches = 490)

Round 10 : chain 1 and 1 single crochet (=SC) in same stitch, 1 SC in next 7 stitches and 2 SC in 9th stitch. Work 200 SC along the long side. In first semicircle work (1 SC in first 8 stitches + 2 SC in 9th stitch) 5 times (total = 50 stitches), then crochet 200 SC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat (1 SC in first 8 stitches + 2 SC in 9th stitch) 4 times (total = 40 stitches). Slip stitch in top of fist SC made. (total stitches = 500)

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave all ends in.

My scarf is long 196 cm and 26 cm wide.

EMBELLISHMENTS

In the middle of the scarf, I worked a long line of slip stitches in black just to add a modern touch !

Then, I added some fringes : I cut 6 lenghts (15 cm long, each) for each group of fringes (total = 10) and I knotted them just along the round sides as you can see in next picture

Very simple, but nice !!!!

If you fancy to crochet one, please, let me know !!!!

  1. Well I love the flouro green/yellow with all the grey! it's funny they are the exact neutrals I used in my blanket once, do you remember?!..and I thought little pops of colour was nice with it:-) I've been working with some brighter than normal colours, pinks and orange, no less....we must have swapped ideas! :-) X

  2. It is lovely! I like your bright colours as they match your bright sparkly personality - which I know you have! - but this is nice too, quieter, but that is good too! This is your softer side! A great make of course, as always!

Make it ! The Granny Yarn Chain !!!

ARE YOU READY FOR THIS ???? SURE YOU ARE !!! I now that!!!! ;oD So during this last week I was showing you via Instagram (see  my personal feed ) some colourful pictures about my new crochet w.i.p. , which I completed last night ... ... so this morning, before school/office time a couple of boys helped me with the last photos for this blog post ... TA-DAH ... The beauty of this project resides in the fact that is adaptable to any extent, any kind of yarn and any corner of your home (in or out!) !!! The inspiration and "creative kick" derives from two other projects I've seen around :  The Chain Statement Necklace  by my dear friend Miki from  Set Free My Gypsy Soul  and  Peggy's Comfy Indoors Blanket  by Pip Lincoln from  Meet Me at Mike's  !!! Thank you both, girls !!! It has been a long time since I've been wanting to crochet (or even knit !) a paper chain ... I made some long paper chains for our Christmas tree back in Indonesia but I al

Make it ! Knitted triangular scarf !!!

Last December, I saw a very simple and cute scarf knitted by Angie ( le monde de sucrette) and I thought to knit one for me, too, but then I was busy with the gifts to prepare for family and friends back in Italy .... so nothing was done for me!!! Luckily, some days ago, while browsing through my blogs list, I found a post from Ilaria ( IDA interior lifestyle) , who was proposing the same (she added a pompom!) piece of clothing .... I didn't have any excuse to wait longer for knitting my own triangular scarf!!!! ;oD So, I started .... Do you want to start one, too ??? Well, you need : some yarn ! My personal choice was : Lana Grossa Basics Calmo (59% acrylic, 24% cotton and 17% linen), shade 207. All my 4 balls of yarn (50g each) have been used for this project. Then 2 balls (50g each) from Rowan Classic Cotton Jeans Yarn (100% cotton), shade 365-Sierra, for both stripes and tassels! a pair of 4,5mm  knitting circular needles or, if you prefer, a pair of long strai

Make it ! The Granny Bunny !!!

You know, this picture from my  Instagram feed  has collected more than 900 likes ... ... and a colourful crocheter named Karin @woolfieber , made her own version just looking at my pic (you can find her work  HERE  ) !!!! My idea, since the beginning , was to prepare a photo tutorial for you, but do you really need one ? These Granny Bunnies are so easy to crochet, believe me !!!! YOU NEED : some colourful mercerised cotton a 3,5 mm hook a pair of scissors a tapestry needle beads for embellishments (optional) Please note that I follow the US crochet terminology, thank you ! Each bunny measures 13 cm in height and it can be used for different purposes : bunting, hanging decorations, appliques, brooches, on napkin rings and more !!!! The sky's the limit !!! You can use this pattern even with different yarns and, consequently, hook sizes !!! ;oD Abbreviations : DC = double crochet ch = chain SC = single crochet 2SCtog = 2 single crochet
