Make it ! The Granny Yarn Chain !!!

ARE YOU READY FOR THIS ????

SURE YOU ARE !!! I now that!!!! ;oD

So during this last week I was showing you via Instagram (see my personal feed) some colourful pictures about my new crochet w.i.p. , which I completed last night ...

... so this morning, before school/office time a couple of boys helped me with the last photos for this blog post ... TA-DAH ...

The beauty of this project resides in the fact that is adaptable to any extent, any kind of yarn and any corner of your home (in or out!) !!!

The inspiration and "creative kick" derives from two other projects I've seen around : The Chain Statement Necklace by my dear friend Miki from Set Free My Gypsy Soul and Peggy's Comfy Indoors Blanket by Pip Lincoln from Meet Me at Mike's !!! Thank you both, girls !!!

It has been a long time since I've been wanting to crochet (or even knit !) a paper chain ... I made some long paper chains for our Christmas tree back in Indonesia but I always thought that something made out of yarn will be more durable, right ?

So here I am with this colourful project, which I'm going to share with you RIGHT NOW !!!

WHAT YOU NEED :

some colourful yarn : I was using some DK acrylics from my personal stash (there is no need to buy new yarn!) and I could do my chain way longer than I did, but other projects are on the way, so...

a 4mm hook

a pair of scissors

a yarn needle

Please remember that I follow the US crochet terminology, thank you !

Be aware that my turning chain is made of 2 chains and not 3, even though working with double crochets (= DC) ! Notice that this turning chain is never considered as a proper stitch, too !

We are going to crochet a lots of granny rectangles. If you never did one before or your memory is simply a little bit rusty, I suggest you to look at some videos on YouTube, like How to crochet a GRANNY RECTANGLE by Bella Coco or How to crochet a granny rectangle by Yolanda Soto Lopez .... there are a lot more !!!! ;oD

Pattern for the GRANNY RECTANGLE

My chain is made of 24 rectangles or links.

Each rectangle is worked in 3 rounds and every round is crocheted in a different colour.

I prefer to weave in ends all the time one round is completed, to avoid too many tails at the end of the work !!!

The picture above shows you a complete rectangle I'm giving you the pattern to crochet. Useful if you prefer to sew your rectangles together, but ... I prefer to use the join-as-you-go method, so my rectangles, instead, are never totally done, as I complete each of them while joining to the previous link : no worries, I'm going to show you how!!!

first round : choose your first colour and make a slip knot on your hook.

Chain 30+2 (= my turning chain!), wrap yarn around hook and push it in 3rd chain from hook : work your first DC. In the same chain, work other 2 DCs, so that you will have your first shell (in above chart : extreme right, you can see a small horizontal shell with a .... sorry for the quality of my drawing!). Now chain 2, then work the first shell (1) of the long side and chain 1. Skip two chains and in 3rd chain work the new shell and chain 1. Repeat this pattern until you reach 10 shells ( you are in the second last chain of your foundation chain)! After this shell, chain 2 and work shell B in last chain. Chain 2, s you can start to crochet the second long side of your rectangle, working your 10 shells at the base of the previous shells and remembering to space them with a chain-1 space !
When shell 10 is completed, chain 2 and slip stitch in the top of first DC made. Slip stitch even in the tops of the following 2 DCs and in the corner!
Cut yarn and fasten off.

second round : choose a new colour and, in the same corner you have completed your first round, add the new yarn (insert front to back your hook in corner, pull new yarn from back to front, wrap yarn around hook and pull it trough the loop!), chain 1 and crochet 3 DCS, chain 2, 3 DCs in this first corner. Chain 1, (3 DCs in chain-1 space + chain 1) 9 times. In second and third corner : 3 DCs, chain 2, 3 DCS and chain 1. Along the other long side : (3 DCS in chain-1 space + chain 1) 9 times. In fourth corner : 3 DCs, chain 2, 3 DCs. Chain 1 and slip stitch in top of first DC made. Slip stitch even in the tops of the following 2 DCs and in the first corner!
Cut yarn and fasten off.

third round : choose the last colour and join it as done for the second round !
After the joining, chain 1 and crochet 3 DCS, chain 2, 3 DCS in this first corner. Chain 1, (3 DCs in chain-1 space + chain 1) 10 times. In second corner : 3 DCs, chain 2, 3 DCs and chain 1. Work 1 shell in next chain-1 space and chain 1. In third corner : 3 DCs. chain 2, 3 DCS and chain 1. Along the other long side : (3 DCs in chain-1 space + chain 1) 10 times. In fourth corner : 3 DCs, chain 2, 3 DCs and chain 1. In next chain-1 space crochet a shell + chain 1. Slip stitch in top of first DC made. Slip stitch even in the tops of the following 2 DCs and into the first corner !
Cut yarn and fasten off.

This is the full pattern of a granny rectangle made of 3 rounds.

Honestly, I stop mine (see above picture) when half fourth corner (3 DCs + chain 1) is done ...

In this way I can use the join-as-you-go method to join the short sides of my rectangle (s) to form a link (s) for my granny yarn chain !

Wanna see how ?

The JOIN-AS-YOU-GO METHOD to make links

We need to have links for our chain, right ?

Nice, right ???

But how to do that???

Very simply !!!

When you have a rectangle almost done (just started half fourth corner of third round), you need to fold it in half (back sides facing each other) and make pass the short side completed, from bottom to top, inside a previous link already joined ...

... and be sure to have the rectangle and the link in the right position, as follows ...

... with the completed side of your rectangle at the top and the uncompleted side at the bottom !

Let's start the joining !!!

Insert the tip of your hook in the corner at the top (see above picture, left), wrap yarn and and pull it to the front, through the loop formed by last chain 1 : slip stitch done (joining officially started!)!

You can complete the 4th corner of your rectangle ...

... by working 3 DCs in that corner, as usual (see above pic) !

Then ...

... slip stitch in above chain-1 space (it replaces the chain 1) (see above pic) and work a new shell in next chain-1 space (see below pic) ...

.... and, again, slip stitch in the above chain-1 space, as did previously ...

Now : slip stitch in top of first DC made at the beginning of round 3 of your rectangle ...

... and slip stitch in tops of following 2 DCs and in corner, too !! Hope you can see this in the below pic ...

To complete the joining, just slip stitch in the top corner ...

Joining done !!!!!

DON'T CUT ANY YARN !!!!

We have to finish off the link properly ! In order to do that, simply turn your work from left to right of 90 degrees ...

... and work a single crochet (= SC) in the first corner at the left of the joining line.

You have to work 3 SCs into the tops of each shell and 1 SC in each chain-1 space and corner!

When the round is completed (last SC in corner adjacent joining line), slip stitch in first SC done, cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.

If you look closely at the above picture, you can notice how much neater looks the bottom line in comparison with the top one, not yet "single crocheted" !!!! ;oD

So, repeat the same procedure even for the bottom of your link : make a slip knot on your hook, insert it in the top corner at the left of the joined line and work your first SC.

Crochet the same pattern, but this time, when ending the round, slip stitch in the 2nd SC you made !!!

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in all the ends !!!

LINK DONE !!!!! Go on the same way for all the other ones !!!! ;oD

PLEASE, NOTE that even your absolute first link is joined in the same way !!! The only difference is that you don't have to connect it to any link! It will be, instead, the first link to insert in the second one you will make !!!!

Nothing difficult and really addictive !!!

... and some more ...

.... Maybe with a softer yarn and a couple of tassels it would be nice as a scarf, too ....

Have a lovely weekend !!!!

Make it! Mega Oval Scarf !!!

Last year (as last free pattern of 2016!) I gifted you an oval pattern to crochet (mini colourful pillow) and right now, as my first free pattern of the new year, I'm offering you a new oval pattern .... ;O)

The funny thing about this work is not the repetition of the oval shape, but the colours choice, as this is not my usual colourful and bright palette, right?

I think is a good thing try something different from time to time and having some neutral colours in my stash, I decided this was the right time to put them in good use!!!

WHAT YOU NEED :

some chunky yarn ! I've been using the following ones:

ZAMBAK by Kartopu shade K1001(silver grey)
ZAMBAK by Kartopu shade K1002 (darker grey)
ZAMBAK by Kartopu shade K940 (black) (2 balls)
APOLLO by Schachenmayr shade sisal meliert ID #00005 (beige)
SPLASH variegated yarn 50 g (50% acrylic, 50% wool) shade 190 (green prevailing) from Italy
LUMINO by Moda Vera shade 80280255 (neon yellow)

a 5,5 mm hook
a pair of scissors
a yarn needle
stitch markers (optional), to put them on each first and last stitches of both long sides
tape measure or ruler

Remember that I follow the US crochet terminology, thank you !!!

Note that there are increases in each round of the pattern, in both semicircles. The pattern increases of 10 stitches each round, following, more or less, the rules of a Basic Double Crochet Circle Pattern !

SCARF pattern

My colours sequence is the following : silver grey, beige, dark grey, variegated green and black !

With your hook and first colour make a slip knot on the hook and crochet a foundation chain of 204 chain stitches.

Round 1 : wrap yarn around your hook and insert the tip in 3rd chain from hook and work your first double crochet (=DC). This stitch is considered to be part of the second semicircle, as last stitch of it!
Crochet 200 DC along the foundation chain (= first long side). In last chain, instead, work 5 DC (= first semicircle). In this way we can start the second long side, so crochet other 200 DC along the base of the previous side. Now work 4 DC in last chain and slip stitch in top of first DC made (second semicircle completed!). (total stitches : 410)

Round 2 : chain 2 and work 2 DC in the same stitch, work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work 2 DC in each stitch (total = 10 stitches), then crochet other 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : work 2 DC in each stitch (total = 8 stitches). NOTE : you can decide to change colour in the last DC of this round, as I do, or change it at the beginning of next round ! Slip stitch in top of first DC made. (total stitches : 420)

Round 3 : with new colour (beige, in above picture) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, then 2 DC in next stitch. Work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work (1 DC in first stitch + 2 DC in next stitch) 5 times (total = 15 stitches), then crochet other 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat (1 DC in first stitch + 2 DC in next stitch) 4 times (total = 12 stitches). Remember to change colour in last DC ! Slip stitch in top of first DC made. (total stitches : 430)

Round 4 ; with new colour (dark grey, in above picture) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, 1 DC in next stitch and 2 DC in the following stitch. Work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work (1 DC in first DC + 1 DC in next stitch + 2 DC in following stitch) 5 times (total = 20 stitches), then crochet other 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat (1 DC in first stitch + 1 DC in next stitch + 2 DC in following stitch) 4 times (total = 16 stitches). Slip stitch in top of first DC made. (total stitches = 440)

Round 5 : chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, 1 DC in next stitch, 1 DC in following stitch and 2 DC in next stitch. Work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work (1 DC in first stitch + 1 DC in next stitch + 1 DC in following stitch + 2 DC in next stitch ) 5 times (total = 25 stitches), then crochet other 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat (1 DC in first stitch + 1 DC in next stitch +  1 DC in following stitch + 2 DC in next stitch) 4 times (total = 20 stitches). Slip stitch in top of first stitch made. (total stitches = 450)

Round 6 : chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, 1 DC in next stitch, 1 DC in following stitch, 1 DC in next stitch and 2 DC in following stitch. Work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work ( 1 DC in first stitch + 1 DC in next stitch + 1 DC in following stitch + 1 DC in next stitch + 2 DC in following stitch) 5 times (total = 30 stitches), then crochet 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat (1 DC in first stitch + 1 DC in next stitch + 1 DC in following stitch + 1 DC in next stitch + 2 DC in following stitch) 4 times (total = 24 stitches). Remember to change colour in last DC! Slip stitch in top of first DC made. (total stitches = 460)

Round 7 : with new colour (variegated green, in above picture) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, 1 DC in 2nd stitch, 1 DC in 3rd stitch, 1 DC in 4th stitch, 1 DC in 5th stitch and 2 DC in 6th stitch. Work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work (1 DC in 1st stitch + 1 DC in 2nd stitch + 1 DC in 3rd stitch + 1 DC in 4th stitch + 1 DC in 5th stitch + 2 DC in 6th stitch) 5 times (total = 35 stitches), then crochet 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat (1 DC in 1st stitch + 1 DC in 2nd stitch + 1 DC in 3rd stitch + 1 DC in 4th stitch + 1 DC in 5th stitch + 2 DC in 6th stitch) 4 times (total = 28 stitches). Remember to change colour in last DC ! Slip stitch in top of first DC made. (total stitches = 470)

Round 8 : with new colour (black, in above picture) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, 1 DC in next 5 stitches and 2 DC in 7th stitch. Work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work (1 DC in first 6 stitches + 2 DC in 7th stitch) 5 times (total = 40 stitches), then crochet 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat ( 1 DC in first 6 stitches + 2 DC in 7th stitch) 4 times (total = 32 stitches). Slip stitch in top of first DC made. (total stitches = 480)

Round 9 : chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, 1 DC in next 6 stitches and 2 DC in 8th stitch. Work 200 DC along the long side. In first semicircle work (1 DC in first 7 stitches + 2 DC in 8th stitch) 5 times (total = 45 stitches), then crochet 200 DC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat (1 DC in first 7 stitches + 2 DC in 8th stitch) 4 times (total = 36 stitches). Slip stitch in top of first DC made. (total stitches = 490)

Round 10 : chain 1 and 1 single crochet (=SC) in same stitch, 1 SC in next 7 stitches and 2 SC in 9th stitch. Work 200 SC along the long side. In first semicircle work (1 SC in first 8 stitches + 2 SC in 9th stitch) 5 times (total = 50 stitches), then crochet 200 SC along the other long side. In last semicircle : repeat (1 SC in first 8 stitches + 2 SC in 9th stitch) 4 times (total = 40 stitches). Slip stitch in top of fist SC made. (total stitches = 500)

Cut yarn, fasten off and weave all ends in.

My scarf is long 196 cm and 26 cm wide.

EMBELLISHMENTS

In the middle of the scarf, I worked a long line of slip stitches in black just to add a modern touch !

Then, I added some fringes : I cut 6 lenghts (15 cm long, each) for each group of fringes (total = 10) and I knotted them just along the round sides as you can see in next picture

Very simple, but nice !!!!

If you fancy to crochet one, please, let me know !!!!

Make it! Mini colourful pillow !!!

Do you remember these little beauties ???

Well, if not (!!!!!), you can read all the story about them in THIS OLD POST of mine !!! ;oD

Anyhow, today I celebrate my first 5000 followers on INSTAGRAM !!!!

So I decided to THANK YOU, old and new followers, with a new free pattern : yes, a mini pillow pattern, as I was asked various times if there was a pattern for this little thing .... NOW YES!!!

WHAT YOU NEED :

some chunky and colourful yarns
a 5,5mm hook
a pair of scissors
a yarn needle
stitch markers (optional): I put them in each first and last stitches of both semicircles!
toy stuffing

Remember that I follow the US crochet terminology, thank you!

I've been using yarns from my personal stash. You can use any kind of yarn weight, to have a smaller or bigger pillow!!!! If you don't like the "V" shape of the pillow's base, simply crochet less stitches in the semi rounds of the oval : instead of 7 stitches (read first round of pattern), try with 5 or 3 !!! ;oD

Note that the pattern increases of 14 stitches every round !!!!

PATTERN

1st round : choose a colour to start your work (PATONS JET 12 ply shade 812 pink) and make a slip knot on your hook and chain 18. Wrap yarn around hook, insert the tip in 3rd chain from hook and crochet your first double crochet (=DC). Work other 14 DC in next chains. In last chain, instead, crochet 7 DC. In doing so, you have automatically turned your work upside-down, so now work 14 DC along the base and in the last chain crochet 6 DC (change colour in last DC as explained HERE, as I do or change it at the beginning of next round!) and slip stitch in top of first DC. (total stitches : 42).
When I change colour, I cut the old one and I work the new one (some stitches) around the tails of both old and new colours. then I cut the excesses of yarn!

2nd round : with the new colour (PATONS JET 12 ply shade 708 rose) chain 2 and 2 DC in same stitch, then work 14 DC along the straight edge. In the first semicircle work 2 DC in each stitch (total=14 DC), then crochet 14 DC along the other straight edge. Last semicircle : work 2 DC in each stitch (total=12 DC). Remember to change colour in last DC, if you like! Slip stitch in top of first DC. (total stitches : 56)

3rd round : with the new colour (ROBIN PAINTBOX chunky shade sunset) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, then 2 DC in next stitch. Work 14 DC along the straight edge. In the first semicircle work (1 DC in first stitch + 2 DC in next stitch) 7 times (total=21 stitches), then crochet 14 DC along the other straight edge. Last semicircle : repeat (1 DC in first stitch + 2 DC in next stitch) 6 times (total=18 stitches). Remember to change colour in last DC! Slip stitch in top of first DC. (total stitches : 70)

4th round : with the new colour (PATONS JET 12 ply shade 810 green) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, 1 DC in next stitch and 2 DC in the following stitch. Work 14 stitches along the straight edge. In the first semicircle work (2 DC in next 2 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 7 times (total=28 stitches). Crochet 14 DC along the other straight edge. Last semicircle : repeat (2 DC in next 2 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 6 times (total=24 stitches). Remember to change colour in last DC ! Slip stitch in top of first DC. (total stitches : 84)

5th round : with new colour (Japanese yarn from Gosyo Sanyo) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, then work 2 DC in next 2 stitches and 2 DC in following stitch. Work 14 DC along the straight edge. In the first semicircle work (3 DC in next 3 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 7 times (total=35 stitches). Crochet 14 DC along the other straight edge. Last semicircle : repeat (3 DC in next 3 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 6 times (total=30 stitches). Remember to change colour in last DC ! Slip stitch in top of first DC. (total stitches : 98)

6th round : with new colour (Filatura e Tessitura di Tollegno S.p.a. LANA GATTO Persiano shade 12961) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, then work 3 DC in next 3 stitches and 2 DC in following stitch. Work 14 DC along the straight edge. In the first semicircle work ( 4 DC in next 4 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 7 times (total=42 stitches). Crochet 14 DC along the other straight edge. Last semicircle : repeat (4 DC in next 4 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 6 times (total=36 stitches). Remember to change colour in last DC ! Slip stitch in top of first DC. (total stitches : 112)

7th round : with new colour (Ripple CHUNKY by KISMET YARNS shade 3960) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, then work 4 DC in next 4 stitches and 2 DC in following stitch. Work 14 DC along the straight edge. In the first semicircle work (5 DC in next 5 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 7 times (total=49 stitches). Crochet 14 DC along the other straight edge. Last semicircle : repeat (5 DC in next 5 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 6 times (total=42 stitches). Remember to change colour in last DC ! Slip stitch in top of first DC. (total stitches : 126)

8th round : with new colour (PATONS JET 12 ply shade 813 red) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, then work 5 DC in next 5 stitches and 2 DC in following stitch. Work 14 DC along the straight edge. In the first semicircle work (6 DC in the next 6 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 7 times (total=56 stitches). Crochet 14 DC along the other straight edge. Last semicircle : repeat (6 DC in next 6 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 6 times (total=48 stitches). Remember to change colour in last DC ! Slip stitch in top of first DC. (total stitches : 140)

9th round : with new colour (Japanese yarn from Gosyo Sanyo) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, then work 6 DC in next 6 stitches and 2 DC in following stitch. Work 14 DC along the straight edge. In the first semicircle work (7 DC in next 7 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 7 times (total=63 stitches). Crochet 14 DC along the other straight edge. Last semicircle : repeat (7 DC in next 7 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 6 times (total=54 stitches). Remember to change colour in last DC ! Slip stitch in top of first DC. (total stitches : 154)

10th round : with new colour (FILATI TROPICAL LANE SPENDOBENE SUPER SPORT shade 334 pink) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, then work 7 DC in next 7 stitches and 2 DC in following stitch. Work 14 DC along the straight edge. In the first semicircle work (8 DC in next 8 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 7 times (total=70 stitches). Crochet 14 DC along the other straight edge. Last semicircle : repeat (8 DC in next 8 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 6 times (total=60 stitches). Remember to change colour in last DC! Slip stitch in top of first DC. (total stitches : 168)

11th round : with new colour (Japanese yarn from Gosyo Sanyo) chain 2 and 1 DC in same stitch, then work 8 DC in next 8 stitches and 2 DC in following stitch. Work 14 DC along the straight edge. In the first semicircle work (9 DC in next 9 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 7 times (total=77 stitches). Crochet 14 DC along the other straight edge. Last semicircle : repeat (9 DC in next 9 stitches + 2 DC in following stitch) 6 times (total=66 stitches). Remember to change colour in the last DC ! Slip stitch in top of the first DC. (total stitches : 182)

You have completed the oval shape !!! It will be quite crinkly, but no worries : the stuffing will smooth every unevenness !!!

If you like, you can weave in some tails !!! ;oD

12th round (scallops) : with new colour (KARTOPU ZAMBAK shade K1001 grey) chain 1 and 1 single crochet (=SC) in same stitch, skip stitch, 6 DC in next stitch, skip stitch, 1 SC in next stitch. Repeat (skip stitch, 6 DC in next stitch, skip stitch, 1 SC in next stitch) 43 times.
Work last scallop (#45) : skip stitch, 6 DC in next stitch, skip stitch and slip stitch in first SC.

Cut yarn, end off and weave in ends.

The big part is done ! Now we need to fold our piece of fabric in half

Then you need to choose a new colour (FILATI TROPICAL LANE SPENDOBENE SUPER SPORT shade 92 orange) to start the joining of the scallops, to seal the mini pillow with the toy filling inside !

We have an odd number (45) of scallops, so we will have one scallop on one side with no matching scallop on the other side !!! This scallop will be folded in half and the two halves of the same scallop will match (see above picture on the right and the other picture below) ...

You will push the tip of your hook in this solitary scallop in both stitches numbered 4 and 3 (the central ones of the scallop).
Now, remembering that each scallop is made of 6 stitches and that between the scallops you have 1 SC, you can start the joining with simple slip stitches ...

After the joining of the first 12 couples of scallops, you can start to fill the pillow with some toy stuffing

Little by little you add slip stitches and some stuffing and you reach the end of the pillow, with last scallops and stitches, so you can cut yarn, fasten off and weave in the ends!

As you can see, in the front of your pillow you will have a nice chain of slip stitches, while in the back you will have a kind of straight stitches ...

This new pillow is ready to join some old friends ...

To have an idea of the real dimensions, my son Matteo helped me to take a couple of pictures ...

Hope you like it !!!!

Thank you again for your support, with all my heart

xxxx Alessandra
